The environment desk

This desk covers climate, energy, land and water, biodiversity, pollution, and the public bodies that regulate them. The IPCC, national weather and hydrological services, energy regulators, and environment ministries are documents and agencies — not mascots.

Extreme weather is reported as weather until a specific attribution study, a named scientist, or an official assessment is the story. Then we say what that assessment found, including the uncertainty. We will not collapse every flood into a slogan, and we will not flatten every energy story into a morality play.

Energy and land

Oil, gas, coal, nuclear, wind, solar, grids, and the minerals under them are Business as well as environment. Agriculture, forests, and cities are land-use stories with owners and maps. Science that measures the system still starts on Science.
