The sports desk

Sports is competition and the institutions around it. This desk will cover clubs and national teams, players, managers, owners, and the governing bodies that write the rules: FIFA, UEFA, the IOC, World Athletics, the ICC, the NFL, the NBA, and the domestic leagues that matter to a given story.

A result is a fact. A season is a narrative. A transfer, a strike, a doping case, a stadium deal, or a broadcasting contract is often the real story. We will not pretend that a recap of every fixture is coverage, and we will not invent a press box we do not sit in.

Labor and money

Players’ unions, women’s leagues, migrant labor around a World Cup or an Olympics, and the public money that builds an arena belong in the report when they are in the facts. Those stories may also run on Business or News.
